The Marble Jar
About the Ministry
The Marble Jar Approach is a trauma‑informed framework developed by Ben Flowers that helps uncover the strengths children may have learned to hide as a result of traumatic experiences. Trauma is an emotional response to a deeply distressing event, and this framework emphasizes that every child possesses inherent strengths—referred to as “marbles”—that can be revealed through intentional reframing, reflection, and reinforcement. This mindset shifts the focus from managing behavior to restoring identity.
The approach is designed to equip caregivers and community leaders to create safe, supportive environments where children affected by trauma can begin rebuilding a positive sense of self. It is not a form of therapy and does not replace clinical treatment. Instead, it is a caregiver‑centered, coaching‑oriented model that encourages adults to rethink how they interpret and respond to children’s behaviors, particularly those shaped by traumatic experiences.
A key principle of the Marble Jar Approach is the understanding that trust is built through small, consistent actions rather than singular moments. Trust develops gradually but can be lost quickly. The emphasis is on steady, reliable care—not perfection.
