About the Ministry
Pastor Chris Battle started a Community Garden on the property of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Knoxville, TN. It was during this time that he learned about food disparity and food deserts. There are approximately 17 food deserts in Knox County. A food desert is defined as a community where 1/3 is in poverty and the community is one mile or more from a grocery store or farmers market. Battlefield Farms started as a garden on church property that has grown in 7 years to a large property and a mobile capacity offering fresh produce weekly to needy families. And the need continues to grow.
BattleField Farm is an urban farm with the mission of transforming the community’s relationship to land and food in East Knoxville’s underserved communities. Battle Field Farm is working to end food insecurity by partnering with community members to make fresh food accessible and to cultivate land-based sovereignty through education, workforce development, and direct relationships to land.
